How should furniture CAD blocks be set up?
Keep outline, detail, elevation and clearance on separate layers so clearances can be frozen. Insert wall pieces at the back centre and free-standing pieces at the centre, and mirror a block instead of redrawing it for a right-hand version.
Layer standard
| Layer | Holds |
|---|---|
| A-FURN | Outline |
| A-FURN-DETL | Detail |
| A-FURN-ELEV / A-FURN-ELEV-DETL | Elevations |

| A-FURN-CLR-IDEN | Clearance label |

- Wall pieces such as a sofa, bed, vanity or cabinet: back centre.
- Free-standing pieces such as tables: centre.
Questions
Why put clearances on their own layer?
You can freeze them for client plans and thaw them for coordination without changing the block.
Draw it at your size
Type the dimensions and download DXF + IFC, with the clearance on its own layer.
These are planning rules of thumb. Check local codes, accessibility rules and manufacturer data for your project.
